Steve Fretzin has been counseling lawyers about how to improve their practices, grow their skills and serve their clients for over 20 years. He hosts a podcast called “BE THAT LAWYER,” where attorneys join him to discuss who they are and how they have organized their law practices to better serve their clients. Steve specializes in coaching lawyers to do what they do, but better. That is why he brings guests in to share their insights and knowledge.
Recently, our own Jim Coogan joined BE THAT LAWYER to discuss Coogan Gallagher. Steve and Jim zeroed in on the importance of communication with clients. Jim explained that this is the cornerstone to building solid working relationships. Without trust, clients will not let their lawyer in. And without a deep understanding of their client’s needs and their case, a lawyer cannot do their job.
Beyond communicating with clients, Jim also explains the importance of listening and understanding the audience you are communicating with. That without knowing who you are speaking to and finding them where they are, you cannot persuade and achieve your goals. For a lawyer, persuading a Judge or a Jury is critical. As Jim describes: everything a lawyer does should be directed towards those goals. And it is all part of effective and successful communication.
